Laser therapy (also known as low-level laser therapy or cold laser) utilizes visible and infrared light energy (photons) to stimulate healing and pain relief at a cellular and tissue level in the body. The light energy is converted into chemical energy at the cellular level so that the cells can function better by producing more ATP, releasing growth factors for cell proliferation, and improving white blood cell function. Vasodilation occurs at the tissue level recruiting more blood flow to the area to promote wound healing and assisting in flushing out inflammatory mediators and edema.
Laser therapy can decrease pain by reducing inflammation, releasing endorphins, and decreasing fibrous tissue in the body. It promotes tissue healing by increasing epithelial and collagen formation as well as enhancing cellular regeneration. Laser therapy is indicated for wound healing, post-operative pain and inflammation, muscle strains, tendon and ligament injuries, degenerative joint disease (arthritis), for a variety of conditions that cause back pain and for stimulation of acupuncture points in patients that do not tolerate needles.
